This is why we can’t have nice things
Steve Brown, 35, vice president of partnerships for the city's minor-league soccer team and owner of a sports memorabilia store, said he pays $3,600 a month for a one-bedroom apartment downtown. That's "way more" than his rent in Atlanta a few years ago, he said.
He's leaning toward Collins but said he hasn't paid much attention to the race."How is somebody supposed to survive?" said Jennifer Perry, 29, a convenience-store assistant manager pregnant with her third child, who moved this month to the state capital of Augusta after six years in Portland because she and her fiancé couldn't find an affordable apartment there. "I don't understand why it's the way it is, and why we're worried about everything else."

LaNeve, Hegseth toady, making sure the Army isn’t all that it can be
The elimination of a futuristic drone battalion is part of a broader "back-to-basics" approach ordered up by Gen.
Christopher LaNeve, the acting chief of staff of the Army who is closely aligned with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The battalion was a signature initiative of LaNeve's predecessor, Gen. Randy George, whom Hegseth ousted in April.LaNeve and Driscoll clashed this summer over LaNeve's effort to rewrite the Army's physical-fitness standards, U.S. officials said.
Under LaNeve's direction, the service replaced traditional height-to-weight tables and circumference-based tape tests with a
"waist-to-height ratio" of less than 0.55 as its new body-composition standard.
Driscoll pushed to keep a performance exemption for soldiers who score highly on the Army Fitness Test, arguing that under the new system stocky but strong soldiers would be unfairly punished. But LaNeve dug in his heels, and a performance exemption was excluded, U.S. officials said. Exemptions for pregnant and postpartum soldiers remain in effect, according to Army officials.

Excellent read Visualized Musk falling down to earth, like Icarus, with a very loud thud, and a dead $TSLA price.
But, as the Greeks understood, the mortal who acts as if he were a god is bound to fall victim to hubris. Or, to put it in Christian terms,
"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." 2

It is an interesting showcase of the stupidity spectrum of the average American Voter Exhibit A:
Jim Dubela voted for Trump in 2024 in the hope he would address the cost-of-living
crunch and improve the
U.S. economy. The 66-year-old retired airline
captain wanted to see Trump stand in front of a whiteboard on his first day in office and outline his plans for reducing inflation, increasing GDP, trimming the budget deficit and fixing the healthcare system.

When this AI party ends, it’s not going to be pretty
"I'm fearful that we're building unintended leverage that isn't fully understood," said Mark Hackett, chief market strategist for Nationwide's investment management group. "You've got people with a lottery mentality using margin to buy options on levered ETFs. That's three or four layers."
Buyers ranging from hedge funds to teenagers on Robinhood have poured money into leveraged ETFs this year, helping to nearly double the assets in these funds to a record $220 billion between March 30 and June 3, according to FactSet.
The most popular leveraged-fund offerings are tied to indexes of technology and semiconductor stocks, as well as individual companies like Tesla, Nvidia and most recently, SpaceX.

Ultra wealthy and centrists want to wage a “war”, but have zero ideas about what to do, given burning a lot of money to keep people poor didn’t work.
One longtime strategist has floated a kind of political-giving organization that functions like the Robin Hood Foundation—the poverty-focused nonprofit whose board is stacked with finance luminaries—and gathers money to support moderate causes and candidates. Others described a desire to fund the otherwise unglamorous work of get-out-the-vote campaigns and candidate development. The name of at least one CEO was raised as a future challenger, as if just mentioning him could will a mayoral campaign into existence.

This incompetent, mad man — a poor excuse for a human being — has the Iranians consulting a psychiatrist for how to negotiate with a narcissistic sociopath.
Still, Iranian diplomats say the president's unusual style has them reading "The Art of the Deal," the 1987 book written by Trump and journalist Tony Schwartz where the future president outlines his negotiating tactics as a real-estate tycoon. The bestseller advises negotiators to use extreme, unpredictable demands to create anxiety and force concessions from rivals.
Iranian negotiators have told mediators that they consulted a team of psychologists to help them understand the president's mindset, some mediators said. Iranian diplomats work with the specialists to try to predict Trump's public response to Iran's proposals, they said.

This wasn’t a mistake. This was a bad decision, taken by those who think they are smarter than they actually are.
"You always learn from mistakes. It was a big mistake," said Bravo at the Sohn Conference last month, when asked about Medallia. "That was one of our 2021 deals. We were moving really fast during that time... We underwrote really fast growth, and in hindsight we paid too much because that growth didn't materialise."

It might help if we asked what society actually wants from this transformative technology. What problems could it solve for the benefit of all? Could we employ AI to finally crack the problem of nuclear fusion, to bring abundant clean power in a world being rocked by climate change?
Or to find a cure for Alzheimer's, a source of so much human misery? Yet companies devote more time launching consumer products than talking about such quests.

Reprehensible 🤬 This just confirms my belief that the root of all evil is driven by religion, nationalism, greed, and ignorance
National security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir released footage of some 400 foreign nationals forced to kneel with their heads
on the ground while being taunted by the far-right politician as "terrorists".
surrounded by masked Israeli policemen with automatic weapons. The video shows one member of the security personnel twisting a woman's head and forcing her roughly to the ground as Ben-Gvir walks past and laughs.
Italians, Greeks, Turks and Irish were among those detained by Israel's navy as they attempted to break the nearly two-decade-long blockade of the Gaza Strip.
In the post on X, the far-right politician wrote "Welcome to Israel - we are the landlords", repeating a right-wing slogan that refers to the Bible as justification for Israeli control of Palestinian lands.

Actually a lot of thought leaders write and keep journals. Writing is typically how people clarify their thoughts. But corporate lawyers hate it. Once had to attend a legal/HR training from my company, on why keeping documentation to a minimum was preferred and to purge every so often.
"He was journal-maxxing his plans," Jason Calacanis said on the "All-In" podcast.
"It's not just journal-maxing," co-host David Sacks added. "It's discovery-maxxing."
"I love the guy, but what the f-is he thinking?" David Friedberg chimed in. "I don't know anyone that has a diary. I've never heard of this."

One thing is for sure, Bessent as Treasury Secretary, has cemented his legacy as a jackass. Garbage person
Powell's rejection of the shadow chair idea is fitting given that it was an idea floated specifically to undermine him. Treasury.
Scott Bessent proposed the plan for a shadow Fed chair in October 2024 when
he was still a private citizen. Now-President Donald Trump was fed up with Powell before he'd even won election that
year, so Bessent proposed designating a replacement far in advance. "Based on the concept of forward guidance, no one is really going to care what Jerome Powell has to say anymore, " Bessent said.

While I like the concept of e-bikes, it’s struggled to work well, even in a country as bike dense as China — let alone a country like the U.S., where having an infrastructure to support bike riding is a fight. I don’t understand this gambit, but good luck to Rivian
From what we've seen so far, much of the differentiation appears to lean heavily on software, integration, and user experience. ALSO has developed real, impressive innovation that rockets e-bike technology years into the future. From ride-by-wire, where the pedals aren't mechanically connected to the rear wheel, to swappable subframes and more, there are impressive engineering leaps throughout the bike. Those are important factors, no doubt. But when you strip an e-bike down to its fundamentals - motor power, battery capacity, range, and overall performance - those are still the metrics almost all e-bike buyers use to make decisions. And when ALSO's $4,500
high-tech e-bike travels the same distance at the same speed as a $1,000 e-bike, it becomes a hard sell to anyone who isn't 100% sold on owning the most innovative bike on the block.
If a high-tech bike ends up offering similar core performance to models that cost a fraction of the price, it raises a fair question: what exactly is the customer paying for?

So many simmering tensions coming out from Trump & Netanyahu’s actions. This has potential in conflict widening. It’s not 100% about the money, but the line about Saudi Arabia not being able to afford to bail out Pakistan was funny.
After the US and Iran agreed a ceasefire, Pakistan this month positioned fighter and support aircraft in Saudi Arabia as part of their agreement, Riyadh said. But the existence of the pact had failed to deter Iranian missile and drone attacks
against the Gulf kingdom.
"The Saudis never had any illusions about Pakistani help and were simply hoping Iran would think twice before attacking them. This proved wrong," said Bernard Haykel, professor of near eastern studies at Princeton University, who is writing a book about the Crown Prince Mohammed
bin Salman.
"Saudi cannot afford to bail
out Pakistan," said Haykel.

I do not understand people who buy or take on loans of this magnitude, when they didn’t have to, and can’t afford to. Though I get emotion and wants can override common sense.
A prospective buyer recently sought to trade in a Ford F-150 Lightning for a Mercedes GLE
Coupe, but that potential customer owed about $87,000 on the pickup truck. Horner estimates the Ford pickup truck was worth about $47,000—leaving the buyer well underwater.
"This is a battle that we're fighting every day," Horner said in an interview.
More Americans turning in their cars to buy new ones are encountering a difficult reality:

In his first weeks in that role, Blanche has said publicly that Trump has a right and a duty to influence the Justice Department's probes of the people who investigated him for years, and that Americans should be happy with Trump's involvement in the affairs of the agency, which historically sought to keep its distance from the White House on criminal investigations.

This has been my fear, and the markets desperate push to believe things are going to be normal again, strengthened my belief this ceasefire was “too easy”.
Either outcome is possible - but my money is on escalation. If that is right, then the Middle East and the world
economy have not yet seen the worst of this crisis.
Escalation is likely because both the US and Iran seem to feel that they can force the other side to crack first. US vice-
president JD Vance returned home from failed talks with the Iranians in Pakistan on April 12 in an upbeat mood - telling confidants that the US blockade would
probably force the Iranians to fold within a few days.

Well done to Trump & Netanyahu 👏👏👏 Mission accomplished! 🫡
"The war changed the regime-and not in a good way," said Danny Citrinowicz, who formerly headed the Iran desk for Israeli military intelligence. "We created a reality that is worse than what Iranians were facing before the war."
Iran's hard-liners—anti-Western ideologues with no tolerance for domestic dissent-have always had a place in the country's overlapping and competing circles of power, their influence rising under the patronage of the elder Khamenei. But they now dominate Iran's political and military leadership, energized by a war that many of them believe presages the return of a Shiite Muslim messiah.A congressional bill introduced in November called the Habib Circle "one of the regime's highest
informal security-intelligence networks, which has committed human rights violations and is involved in terrorist activities."
The new leadership has proved resilient and adaptable, emerging from the first five weeks of the war with its command and control intact. Their
hard-line approach is evident in their appointments. They include Iran's new national security chief, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, a former Revolutionary Guard commander with a violent background.
