This #WorldHomelessDay we are asking you to write to your MP and call for safe, stable housing for young refugees. Many of the young people we support are navigating housing insecurity every day, often while trying to rebuild their lives after receiving refugee status.

Donate to help us provide emergency accommodation to women experiencing street homelessness. Each night costs us £100 and the need becomes ever pressing as the weather gets colder. Emergency accommodation means somewhere safe and warm to rest. 💜🏠 www.refugeewomen.co.uk/donate/ Thank you! 18/18

No-one should experience homelessness. We call for: 👉 A return to the extended move-on period of 56 days 👉 The right to work for people seeking asylum 👉 Improved access to, and levels of, asylum support 👉A safe place to call home - for everyone 16/🧵

While we welcome this commitment, without major reforms to hostile asylum policies that fuel homelessness, the commitment rings hollow and risks excluding people who have sought safety in the UK. The Prime Minister must act, now. 15/🧵

🗣️“It wasn’t what happened to me in my country that broke me. It was what I went through here.” - Saron Homelessness retraumatises women. It harms their physical and mental health. The Prime Minister has made the welcome commitment to end rough sleeping as a key Government priority. 14/🧵

That was KM's lived experience 👆 Forced destitution pushes women not only into rough sleeping, but also into abuse and exploitation. Women are forced to stay with abusive hosts, remain in violent relationships, or endure exploitation at work, just to keep a roof over their heads. 10/🧵

Imagine having to accomplish these major life milestones in just 6 weeks. It's incredibly difficult for anyone, but even harder for people who have just received refugee status. Most people are banned from work and forced to survive on as little as £9.95 to £49.18 a week up until that point. 7/🧵

Unfortunately, Serena's story is far too common. Currently, the Government gives people granted refugee status just 42 days to move out of their asylum accommodation and into new housing. Within 42 days, they must: 👉 Open a bank account 👉 Secure employment 👉 Find new housing And much more. 6/ 🧵

This took a severe toll on her mental health. Serena reached out to tell us what had happened and we provided 4 nights accommodation to ensure she had somewhere safe and warm to stay. It took the Home Office a further SIX days to provide Serena with the accommodation she had been promised. 5/🧵

Women are made vulnerable to homelessness at every stage of the asylum process, including after refugee status has been granted. Serena became homeless because of poor communication and unexplained Home Office delays regarding her accommodation. 3/🧵

🏠 Everyone needs somewhere safe to call home. For refugee women, a home means somewhere to rebuild, heal and begin again. Yet many refugee women are pushed into homelessness by hostile asylum policies, placing them at risk of further violence, abuse, and harm. #WorldHomelessDay 1/🧵

Understood! The Home Secretary was speaking about women being survivors of rape specifically. Our second post was intended to talk about survivors of SGBV more broadly - which is where we referenced SGBV - as this better represents our network of women. We would never want to obfuscate.

Our decades worth of research consisently shows that the majorty of women seeking asylum in the UK are survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. It is positive that the Home Sec. is acknowledging women's specific experiences of persecution and seeking safety, as they are often overlooked.

While SGBV is male dominated and rooted in systemic gender power imbalances, some women we support experience SGBV by female family members for example, so it is also more encompassing of the experiences of the refugee and asylum-seeking women in our network. Thanks for reaching out 💜

That is not a fair or compassionate way to treat survivors of sexual and gender-based violence who are seeking safety here. The Government must: 👉 Reopen refugee family reunion 👉 Open a specialised caseworker unit for survivors of SGBV 👉 Dismantle the culture of disbelief 👉 End detention 2/2

The Home Secretary rightly points out that nearly all women who make dangerous journeys to the UK are survivors of rape. So why does the Govt. detain women on arrival, let women languish in the asylum system for months and years on end, & close safe routes that support women and children? 1/2

If the Government is serious about safe routes, it must create routes that are genuinely accessible, at scale, and that do not trade in human lives. The most effective thing the Government could do is to reopen Refugee Family Reunion so people can reunite with their loved ones and heal. 7/🧵
