ツノザメ目カラスザメ科カラスザメ属　E. spinax clade
全長: 79cm
分布: 東北地方〜熊野灘の太平洋沖、オーストラリア南岸・ニュージーランド沖(別種の可能性あり)
　水深120〜1500mの大陸斜面や海山に生息する。主に頭足類やエビ類、小型の硬骨魚類を食べる。
　胎仔数は12で、出生時は全長〜17cm。オスは約46cm、メスは約50cmで成熟。(矢野ほか, 1989)は、駿河湾で得られた70個体のうち16個体で雌雄同体現象が生じていたことを報告している
　体は頑強。鰓孔は大きく、眼径の約半分。尾鰭上葉長は頭部長に等しい。尾柄は短い。第1背鰭は低く長い。楯鱗は細長い棘状で体に散在し、剛毛状になる。吻の大部分は楯鱗で覆われる。両顎歯は異型。上顎歯は主尖頭と通常3対未満の側尖頭からなり、下顎歯は単尖頭。
　体は暗灰色〜黒褐色で、腹側はよりわずかに暗色。腹鰭上方の黒色斑は不明瞭で、尾鰭の黒色斑は明瞭。

ワニグチツノザメ(上:通常　下:両顎を突出させた状態)のイラスト

全長: 54cm
分布: 駿河湾〜天草灘の太平洋沖、小笠原諸島、台湾、ハワイ諸島
　大陸斜面上部の水深250〜1000mの海底付近に生息する。日周鉛直運動を行い、夜間は水深150mまでの表層〜中層域へ移動する。両顎を突出させて獲物を針状の歯で捕らえ、丸呑みにして食べると考えられている。大型の甲殻類や硬骨魚類を食べる。卵巣内の成熟卵数は25〜26で、出生時は全長〜17cm。オスは全長42〜47cm、メスは全長52cmで成熟。
　眼前吻長は非常に短い。両顎は細長く先端が尖り、両顎を大きく突出させることができる。吻下面に上顎が収まる深い溝がある。両顎歯列数は15〜20/15〜20。両顎歯は針状で単尖頭、内側にわずかに湾曲し、両顎先端で最大。歯間は非常に広い。体は楯鱗で覆われ、ほとんどが菱形状、歯冠部表面に10〜40の切面がある。鰭は無鱗。眼窩背縁に半透明の瞬膜があり、この領域で無色素・無鱗。腸の螺旋数は8〜11。
　体背面は暗褐色で、腹面は発光器が密集しており黒色。
鰭は大部分が半透明で、尾鰭後部は暗褐色。
