Der Holocaust war zu dem Zeitpunkt größtenteils vollendet. Es ging den Offizieren um Stauffenberg, die den Verlauf des Krieges antizipierten darum, die Niederlage der Wehrmacht abzumildern. Die Motivation war nicht so vorbildhaft, wie sie in der bundesrepublikanischen Erzählung gerne gedeutet wird.

Die Todeszahlen deutscher Soldaten waren 1944 und 1945 am größten, während die voraussichtliche Entwicklung der Truppenstärke kontiniuierlich sank.
