The chemical was initially poured into the basin to act as an eco-friendly algaecide and oxidize organic matter. However, as noted by chemical experts, hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidizing and bleaching agent that can attack or strip certain polymer-based coatings and paints if the concentration is high enough or applied repeatedly over porous, spray-coated surfaces.

This dynamic was visibly demonstrated in June 2026. Shortly after workers dumped 12% hydrogen peroxide into the 6.75-
million-gallon pool to combat persistent, fast-growing algae, the newly applied "American flag blue" polyurea coating began delaminating and peeling off the bottom of the basin in large sheets.

We still have good journalism in the UK. This was Channel 4. The BBC is under threat from a $10 billion lawsuit by Trump and recently their coverage seems, shall we say, very ‘CBS like.’ A report on Trump overturning the Obama era climate stuff was very ‘both sides-ism’ - a very concerning trend

I watched this fiasco. It was a disgrace. Bondi failed to answer any questions from Democrats and just shouted back scripted replies from her burn book. At other times she acted like a stroppy mean girl asking for extra time to lob ad hominem attacks. Refusing to look at the victims was disgusting
