I have a friend who is very fond of this mindmelting example of wayfinding at West Ham station. To the extent that she takes family and friends there to take selfies. So come on the internet, what other examples of mad signage are there out there?
A station sign with a white arrow on a blue background, oriented to point to the right. Inexplicably, it is accompanied by white text on a blue background which says "keep left"

UNFOLLOW, BLOCK
Fesshole post: I stopped buying toilet paper during the shortage of 2020. Figured that much of the world doesn't use it anyway, so I switched to using my left hand with soap and hot water. Never felt cleaner and won't go back to toilet paper. No need for a fancy bidet either.

Train arrives in plenty of time, due to depart at 1900, gets the right away from signaller at 1900, leaves at... 1904. This is the sort of casual tardiness that the industry needs to clamp down on, it is endemic

Super strong lede from this month's edition of Modern Railways. Bravo! 👏
According to the boffins at CERN, much of the universe is made of dark matter, which outweighs visible matter roughly six to one and accounts for around 27% of it. A whopping 68% is postulated to be formed of dark energy, which is distributed evenly across the universe and exerts a global effect on it as a whole. Neither can presently be detected and their nature is unknown, yet the most popular and credible scientific theories depend on the existence of something undiscovered to make them work.

Something similar could be said of the Railways Bill, published...

Also: I'd love to see the workings behind this claim, and I'm particular the time period that the electrification capex is spread over. I suspect an unrealistically short period!

Catching up with the latest issue of Modern Railways. Great article on GWR's plans for battery trains, but sorry - this claim has to be challenged. GW Electrification was authorised in 2010, and completed in 2020. No significant work took place before then; indeed […] [Original post on mas.to]

Just catching up on back editions of the PWI journal... good to see a balanced economic view of battery-electric vehicles. This is quite rare in my experience - a railway is an economic system as much as an engineering system and running costs *must* be a key consideration
It is however possible to use vehicles with battery based onboard energy storage systems (OESS) to overcome stray current and OLE challenges. Mott MacDonald led the development of the first modern section of OLE free tramway in Birmingham city centre in 2019 with additional sections added since, (Figure 8). South Wales Metro and Coventry VLR are also planning on using OESS. The capital expenditure benefits have to be balanced by the operational expenditure of
carrying a battery pack on the vehicle increasing track loadings and wear, along with the requirements to replace the battery during the
design life of the vehicle and any charging infrastructure required.
The operational restrictions created by OESS also need to be fully
understood particularly when managing perturbations or incidents on the network which may leave vehicles in a catenary free section.
