There’s an understandable reason why this might not get shared much around my circles on Bluesky. But given my disability background, and the fact this is shaping up to be a very hard day, I found this a beautiful and uplifting story. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

A moment that changed me: I learned to read and write – at 42
I had worked for 25 years, married and started a family. But a crisis at the supermarket reminded me there was something missing from my life

I lived up that hill for three years as a kid. I can’t believe how beautiful it is/was.

Is it more about the story or the battles themselves? Because for the latter, the XCOM games, Mario Rabids games, or even Shining Force 2 might scratch that itch if you haven’t tried them. That said, I’m not into the whole UK boarding school-inspired setting either and still enjoyed Three Houses.

I like him a lot. He also has vitiligo as far as I know.

So you trust Westminster to make the decision for you instead?

Ah, so this is where the confusion has arisen. London contributes a lot more than it takes out. And it isn’t a monolith of 9 million people who all think the same and get “surprised”, but feel free to hold onto that grievance if it makes you feel better.

And by devolved I mean on the level of Wales, not piecemeal metro mayors like we have now.

I don’t think Yorkshire is starving when it comes to amazing national treasures to be fair. I do think Yorkshire needs a fully devolved local government with central govt funding that is going to be more responsive to what Yorkshire needs.

Honestly, I don’t want this to be zero sum. I’m a Londoner but I really want other parts of the country to get better investment and more control of their decisions. And yes, it’s fair London should pay more proportionally. But I don’t think you do this by making London poorer, sorry.
110
Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And yes, London currently keeps less of its tax receipts than say New York, so I’m not sure a change to that arrangement would be to the rest of the country’s advantage. Hong Kong and Singapore seem to have done OK.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
It’s true that most of England suffers from underinvestment. It doesn’t follow that the only reason is because London has had relatively more resources, although I absolutely understand the frustration. Investment in infrastructure and people creates growth in the long term.
110
Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Well I wouldn’t necessarily call it largesse when you compare how London looks compared to European cities, not just capitals. The problem is England is far too centralised and has chronically low investment. Look at how London votes compared to other cities - we didn’t choose this situation.

Most rural places in the world have poor transport connections. My question is why places like Leeds and Sheffield and surrounding areas have such poor transport provision, both within and between them, and I don’t think defunding London is going to be a successful answer.

I'd like to see this mentioned more. Five players that Arsenal had nurtured were poached by City within a few years, while Arsenal were paying for a new stadium and trying to build a new squad. Being picked apart by other clubs, especially City and Chelsea, completely arrested that.

Of course London needs the rest of the UK, just as the rest of the UK needs London. And yes, we have nice museums, but these are frequented by tourists as much as Londoners themselves. The reality of many parts of London is general shabbiness, low investment and decline, just like elsewhere.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I meant people don't just want to be subsidised by London but to be their own centre, to be in control of their own destiny and community. Thinking of it as zero-sum has been a common rhetorical response to Brexit and it hasn't worked. Londoners haven't prevented English regions from being devolved.

It’s a masterpiece. I found it poignant how it evoked the feeling of being in your own prison, detached from the outer world. Maybe that came through so strongly because of Clarke’s own experiences with CFS.

It’s fine for people to have their preferences, it’s the reasons given that I find more revealing. Looks like another sanction for those men who aren’t playing their role in upholding the patriarchy.

I get that people want agency and to be centred. I just don’t think feeding the grievance that London somehow took this away from them is accurate or fair on the people who live here. As little as Londoners think of the rest of the UK, they do want it to be thriving. Success is not zero sum.

Maybe the most persuasive argument I could make for expanding access to ADHD meds: we can be annoying, unreliable, loud, avoidant and impulsive. Well, the most obvious change to those around me is that I’m a more present, nice and less grouchy person. And doesn’t that make things easier for you?

I wish I had an adult looking out for me when I was at my most vulnerable. I wish I could go back in time to thank my past self for persevering and staying alive so that I could get a second chance many years later.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
And I see this pattern repeated too much. People with untreated mental or neurodevelopmental conditions develop physical conditions that are impossible to ignore and make unseen conditions even harder to recognise. Sometimes medicalisation is the way forward before we can truly confront the social.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I do see the irony in only getting to this stage because the new treatment for my autoimmune condition - that hollowed out my 20s - allowed me to take a step up on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Without that medication I’d still be housebound, even if I’d managed to stay alive.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
This is why I get annoyed by people saying that ADHD is purely social and environmental. Am I supposed to wait my entire life for society to change for me? There is no “holistic” way to treat what I have without medication. I will never present as the type of case that needs emergency intervention.

[trigger warning] I don’t know how common this is, but it has surfaced memories of attempted suicide, alcohol abuse and self-harm as a teenager that I’d completely hidden in order to survive. I didn’t realise how important executive functioning is for growth, relationships and processing emotions.

I feel so much love, connectivity and forgiveness of others as well as myself. On the more difficult side, I’m getting a deeper understanding of my traumas and ACE’s too. I’m grateful for the clarity and understanding I’ve gained over the last month, but I need time to sit with this too.

Elvanse was never about working harder, it was about being able to easily shift between tasks and hobbies without burnout, rumination and constant chasing of dopamine hits. I hadn’t appreciated how it would cure my alexithymia. Everything I’ve seen, experienced, remembered has been with new eyes.

Can’t imagine how different things would have been if Hicks and Gillett hadn’t balked at spending £12m on a defender. The “defender” was Dani Alves. Liverpool signed Dirk Kuyt, Pennant, Arbeloa and Bellamy instead.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Indeed. One month here and all of my emotions are sharper, I’m less grouchy and can seemingly shift between tasks and free time without burning out. But sure, maybe Janice can enlighten us with her expert opinion!

I would favour this, but it would be really damaging to the league’s brand. It’s not like Lance Armstrong where all the closest competitors were found to be cheating too. However, anything short of sending the team into the wilderness for at least five years is insufficient in my view.

All of their arguments don’t hold weight but that argument in particular is flimsy. To be honest though, it’s your life, and to them it’s debating online and making others feel bad for sport. Life is too short so I would disengage and move on (I should also take my own advice).

Has the existence of trans women. including on dating apps, ever prevented you from hooking up with other cis lesbians? Theotheries is right - I think trans exclusionary apps have been created. Were they successful though?

And is it really worth ADHD stimulants being schedule 2 controlled drugs? I somehow doubt the risk of someone taking them for fun outweighs all the other comorbid risks of untreated ADHD, not least easy access to other stimulant substances that are much more harmful.

Capacity has crept up a bit, but not nearly enough for the number of people affected. My question would be why NICE guidelines for assessments have been reviewed but not updated since 2019, given how much the picture has changed since then. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

Maybe LGBTQ people in general support trans rights because they’re more likely to know what stigma and exclusion feels like. Maybe you could reflect on this. In any case, I’m off. If you respond again, I’ll ruin the thread by blocking you.
030
Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Because there was no law to stop people filtering on dating sites, so it’s wrong to now use it as a pretext to strip human rights when the evidence shows the whole LGBTQ community, including lesbians, are positive towards trans people. This is going nowhere so I’m now leaving the chat.
130
Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The fact you refer to trans people as activists makes it clear that you don’t see them as people who are worthy of the same basic rights. You’ve not shown any evidence that lesbians support excluding trans people in general, which is what’s now being done in their name. I am now departing this chat.

I made no reference to your gender identity or sexuality, and to be honest I don’t really want to know. That’s purely your business.
110
Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
This is motte and bailey though. You could always set preferences on dating apps. That’s not a valid pretext for stripping the rights of trans people that threatens their access to healthcare and participation in public in general.

Nils 🥚 @1wayoranother.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
You can have sex with whomever you want, but it’s not a valid pretext to strip human rights from the people you find disgusting.
