Quitobaquito Doesn't Quit! ◆ m0r1bund.com/works/eco/quitobaquito… Somewhere in the Sonoran Desert there is water. All life curves towards it. All roads converge on it. People travel from every corner of the world to this singular point […] [Original post on mastoart.social]
A huge feathered serpent bursts forth from a small pond, waves crashing up into the sky around them. The serpent has plumed barbels and pronged horns that curl into a tight spiral, and their body is banded red, yellow, green, white, and black. The pond is surrounded by dense green undergrowth and a cottonwood tree, as well as the rust-red bollards of the U.S.-Mexico border fence, which bend and collapse with the motion of the rising snake. The surrounding text reads “QUITOBAQUITO DOESN’T QUIT!”

Playing around with this wristbreaker again ◆ m0r1bund.com/works/moribund/blinkin… If you haven’t met him yet, this is Tamahuaq, an ancient tree-spirit that was killed and entombed deep underground and forced to parasitize the […] [Original post on mastoart.social]
More design drafts of Tamahuaq, the world tree / parasitic spirit-fungus. He is a chimaera made of mycelium, human body parts, animal bones, and charred wood. He’s mostly quadrupedal, occasionally shuffling around upright. His body is a mass of stringy black fungus grafted onto an oversized ribcage, which trails behind him like a cape or a cage. His front limbs are deerlike, but his cloven hooves are more deeply divided, and he has exaggerated sickle-shaped dewclaws. Together they look more like claws than hooves. Two tree trunks grow from his back, both of which have burn scars, and one of which is cut short and splintered. The unburnt bark is aspen-like, with eye-shaped branch scars. Tamahuaq’s head is a featureless skull with no eye sockets, nose, or jaw, only curved fangs. The skull is bisected from his forehead to his nose. The crack usually looks like a neat red seam, but sometimes the two halves of his skull split apart when he opens his mouth. With an open mouth, we can also see that his jaw and neck are actually made of human hands. They seem to hold up his skull like an offering. Sometimes his braided mane of hands, sticks, and mycelium comes apart like his jaw, creating one big, handsy “mouth” that runs from his skull all the way down to his ribcage.

Tamahuaq has another figure stuck in his mouth—the Warden—who he wears like a mask. The Warden is a mechanically-transfigured human made of living clay, with components that look like polychrome pottery. Parts of him are also fashioned from bone and sunbleached straw. Tamahuaq usually has his teeth closed around the Warden’s waist, carrying him upright in his mouth, so that he looks like a strange biomechanical centaur. Sometimes Tamahuaq swallows him up to his shoulders so that only his head is exposed, and he resembles a sphinx instead. The Warden has a sad and withdrawn affect, and seems resigned to his fate.

back at it again with Blighted Trahearne ◆ m0r1bund.com/works/gw2/an-eldest-so… Finished End of Dragons in Guild Wars 2. After six-odd seasons of dragging his dead weight forward, I felt like it was […] [Original post on mastoart.social]
A scribbly dragon design for Blighted Trahearne of Guild Wars 2 fame. He is long and serpentine, like the vining Mouth of Mordremoth, but he still has his limbs and some other holdovers from his former shape. His face holds an uncanny resemblance to that of his uncorrupted self, and from the front on, it’s proportioned more like a humanoid sphinx than a dragon. From the side, the illusion is lost and we can see the Dragon’s huge teeth lining his skull. When he opens his mouth, his draconic jaw breaks away from his face along the line of his cheekbones. His tough hide is made of scorched wood set in flat plates, like a centipede’s segments. Lush new growth forms his softer underbelly. His face and neck are lined with scraggly leaves that fall over his eyes, much like his old bangs. The leaves come together at the nape of his long neck and form a sawtoothed line down its length, like hackles. The alternating leaves lock together, and then split apart and fan out into two great leaves, like the leaves of a Venus fly trap. The two leaves form a shawl over his shoulders, from which many vines unfurl. The thorny vines resemble a tangled mane, or maybe wings. The tip of his long tail unravels in a similar fashion, with a vaguely helical shape.

His vine-wings are not particularly functional, but he flies anyway, looking like a vining loong in the sky. Perhaps he’s helped along by the leylines tangled in his wings, streaming behind him like ribbons of light and magic.

He finds this shape well-suited for manipulating magic. He and Commander Yuri Six-Cants take a Void-corrupted leyline and split it apart; Yuri uses his sickle-sword as a needle to pull the Void out of the threads of ley magic, which Trahearne holds fast in his mouth. For a couple of cosmic keystones, their efforts look more slapdash and comical than noble and majestic.

Messing around with Yuri and Guild Wars 2 again. We made it to End of Dragons and have had the distinct pleasure of learning that Yuri’s baggage from Path of Fire is even more fucked up than previously imagined. And also I know who Yao is now. I think they’re […] [Original post on mastoart.social]
A painted sketch of Commander Yuri Six-Cants in his mish-mash war-ghost regalia. He’s a tall and imposing figure, built out with planes of fat and muscle. He has a soft, round face and nose, but his eyes are sharp and his expression is hardened. His eyes are painted with stylized tear streaks that continue down to his collar and shoulders, framing the hand-shaped burn scar that the God of War left on his chest. He wears a thatched straw cloak and carries War’s horns as a yoke on his back. Belted around his waist are geometrically patterned cloths, sort of like a layered sarong worn over loose pants. He has some of his ‘locs tied back in a loose knot, but most of them fall freely on his shoulders. In one hand he carries a hook-shaped blade, and in the other, the extinct fires of War. They are a cold black flame that swallows most light, except the piercing white heart of the fire. Yuri’s hands are stained black from handling it.In another sketch, Commander Six-Cants and engineer Yao assess what looks like a dragonjade mech. It’s in rough shape, with shattered pieces of its body floating at odd angles. The jade itself is darker than usual, almost pitch black, and its surface is rougher, like knapped obsidian. Only its chest and hips retain the carved Taotie motifs from the original mech, the rest have been chipped away. It’s animated by War’s cold fire to walk again, smokey bands of black and white streaming from its chassis. Yuri holds a flame up to it cautiously.

Yao stands off to the side and examines the mech. They’re about Yuri’s height with broad shoulders and a tall face to match. They have their hair tied back in a neat bun with jade goggles pulled above their brow. Several spanners and wrenches hang from their waist, above their chunky knee guards and blocky engineer’s boots. They tap their chin thoughtfully with their jade prosthetic arm, which has taken on the same darkened affect as the jade mech. The bottom strip of sketches is a comic. Yao has a jade bot scan Yuri’s mote of fire while they take a look at the readings on a tablet. They’re apparently continuing an earlier conversation, and Yao says, “Commander, Balthazar’s fire was extinguished years ago.”

Yuri squints at them dubiously and says “What– What do you mean? It’s right here. I’ve been carrying it with me.” Yao just rubs their chin and studies the figures on the screen. They say, “Yeah, so, whatever that is, that’s not it.”

They look up at Yuri with an unnervingly pleasant expression, or maybe just one of morbid fascination, and say “It’s not showing up on the readout. At all.”

Yuri recoils from the mote of fire in horror and revulsion. He has more questions now, and probably none of them have answers he wants to hear.

Howdy. I'm 1ore and I make art about deserts, calamity women, and doomed worlds with a hopeful spin. You can see all that at my website ▶︎ m0r1bund.com
The itinerant poet Sadren pauses at the edge of a canyon with his beast of burden. Flat-topped mesas span the horizon. The landscape unfolds below them, ponderosa pines and white limestone cliffs giving way to pinyon, juniper, and bold red sandstone. Water collects in the valley and forms a river, while people collect at its banks. A city is dimly visible in the distant mouth of the canyon. Adobe watchtowers mark the way, with the smoke of their beacon fires drifting into the clear blue sky.The old folk heroes of myth, Sadren and Roan, cornered under a canyon rim. Shadowy Sentinels close in around them, spearheaded by the Beast out of the East himself. The debris disc of a great black hole. The event horizon is a riot of color, from gold to orange to red to magenta to cobalt blue and finally to pitch black. The debris disc below resembles sandstone canyons filled with golden dust. A windsurfer is suspended in space, there, with its pilot taking a moment to rest on the floor of one of the canyons.Len and Sinuk riding two caribou, and looking like a right pair of caribou rustlers as they negotiate with the slopes of the Scaiuq mountain range.
