super curious how this will handle the Hawthorne quote at the heart of the title… *My children have had other birthplaces, and, so far as their fortunes may be within my control, shall strike their roots into unaccustomed earth.*

never not fascinated by the ebbs and flows of when the setting is an internal security service and when it’s external today our collective obsessions seem to be internal (slow horses but not just night agent etc) and to add another layer the privatization of intelligence ( hiya black doves)

“Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy for Mr. Putin who handles informal negotiations with the White House” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/05/w... Dmitriev’s press notices have come a long way from ‘some Russian guy who had a beer with Erik Prince when they both happened to be in the Seychelles.’

of course!! So glad you asked !! And I should also say two things. One is it’s usually prompted by an article I’ve just read and I work in the federal govt on issues of trauma and moral injury and war so have to work a lot in wellness spaces, some of which are salutary and some not

oh I think I mean it across a number of things… there’s so much about reading as good for your brain or as a hedge against loneliness or as a way to get better sleep and yes I want all of those things for all of us but at the end of the day I don’t want reading reduced to how it makes me healthier
