programs don't say "makemkv: /mnt/tmp/Videos/backup: Permission denied" anymore, they just stare at you like "DEBUG: Code 2 at ];H/'$prTohs\AktO,LUu%!:29393447 DEBUG: Code 0 at :b:9rIOi65>McIMewM~:29396345 DEBUG: Code 0 at BkMW6s|]=cakB*nuWl.C:29397426"

> common calling conventions such as sysv64 only provide up to 6 GPRs for integer arguments. A 7th integer argument would trash performance... The simple solution is to turn one of Wasmi’s GPR arguments into a floating-point value where necessary. this is so funny but also makes complete sense!

Distance and maxError are the same. In cjxl setting a distance of 0 switches to mathematically lossless mode. I'm not sure where the bounds 0.1, 15, and 25 come from (whether they're limits of the algorithm itself or just bounds set by the interface to give you reasonable results).

"visually lossless" depends on how closely you look. The official encoder cjxl also lets you specify a quality scale which is mapped to distance, trying to give the same quality as the JPEG quality scale. I guess gimp doesn't expose it: github.com/libjxl/libjx... www.desmos.com/calculator/3...

i worry about whether this will reduce the rate of little papercut usability issues getting fixed if everyone ends up asking LLMs for help rather than making forum posts or bug reports

fixed your headline
A hit song on the Billboard 100 charts is termed *$k$-good* if it is _ever_ in a weekly top-$k$, and *$k$-immediate* if it _debuts_ in the top-$k$.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.

*Headline 1.* Olivia Rodrigo is the first $(10,10)$-Olivian woman.

i once wrote code to order timers scheduled for the same millisecond using an incrementing epoch assigned to each one and in the comparison i had it try to check if one timer was more likely greater than another naturally or due to overflow (so 0 should compare greater than 2^32-1)

@theverge.com @reckless.bsky.social do we need 2 modals for the same newsletter? (bottom one is scroll locked at the bottom of the viewport and appears once i scroll a little into an article, top one blocks all interaction and seems to appear when i scroll to the end of an article and then back up)
Screenshot of The Verge. Most of the page is covered by a newsletter sign up dialog. Slightly visible behind it is a copy of the same form that covers the bottom of the page:

> Ask the driver Can't if you're boarding at the back > look at the sign at the bus stop It would have to be a digital sign with realtime info that not all stops have, and it's still unreliable if two buses show up at similar times (if sign says routes X and Y both arrive in 0 minutes)

190n.bsky.social @190n.bsky.social · 10/03/2025
And they have a whole bus's worth of other places to put that information. All I'm saying is it's useful to have one place which is completely dedicated to showing route info.

190n.bsky.social @190n.bsky.social · 09/03/2025
You can put messaging anywhere else on the bus. Just not in a place that interferes with the actual information people need.

So for titles with DRM, you're not really better off than Kindle books in terms of accessing your purchases if Bookshop goes down or decides they don't like you. I also looked at a couple ebook listings and it doesn't seem like it's clear which ones have DRM and which don't?

Inside SiFive’s P550 Microarchitecture
RISC-V is a relatively young and open source instruction set. So far, it has gained traction in microcontrollers and academic applications. For example, Nvidia replaced the Falcon microcontrollers …
