On 9/11 I woke up to sirens and grabbed a camera. I’ve been returning to photograph the same locations ever since: 25years.org

There’s a lot here, and I tried to make it easy to navigate. Mobile swipes or keyboard arrows turn pages, or type R for a random page. These photographs are meant for large screens when you have some time to explore and reflect.

I’ve never discussed my leukemia (CML) diagnosis before, which happened nine years after 9/11. Was it related to the acrid air and persistent dust that filled my apartment on Canal Street? Or just a genetic accident as I aged 25 years? There’s no way to know.

It’s also a time capsule of NYC street life before smartphones and social media, when memes were posted on walls and protests were organized through flyers and stickers.

The photo archive is split into nine sections: the day itself, cleanup, rebuilding, commerce, patriotism, elections, protests, security and remembrance.

In late July I started sifting through the more than 100,000 snapshots I’ve taken since 2001. More than 30,000 of them were related to 9/11 or to the changes it brought to NYC. I edited those down to 3,300 photos, then cut again to 1,800.

I visited the same locations again and again to take before/after/now comparisons: memorials aging and disappearing, trees growing and dying, street art painted over and emerging again. Sometimes I remembered exactly where I stood in 2001, sometimes I had to check reference photos.

I posted some of these photos in 2001, shrunk down for low-res screens and dial-up modems. A quarter century later, they can now appear at full size. Over 1,000 of them have never been shown before.

It’s not often the general public gets a crash course on the considerations of type design, but this is a delightfully geeky article www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

20 years ago today I started work at the NY Times. I’d studied design and typography, but everything else was a crash course: journalism, cartography, CMYK printing, editing, etc.

in the NYTimes app, there’s a map link (“Tracking the Spread”) at the top of nearly every measles article, or a search for “measles” will bring up the main Measles Outbreak page

One of my early talks around 2010 used unladen swallows as an example, but it was met with blank looks — none of the students had heard about the movie. Had to retire those slides!

The current planetary alignment is more of a loose parade (the planets are spread across about 120 degrees of sky). But now is a great time to enjoy bright Jupiter, Mars, and Venus; with a little effort, you can spot naked-eye Saturn & Mercury too. 🔭🧪 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/s...
Viewed from above the solar system, the seven other planets will fall within Earth’s line of sight at sunset, and will not be obscured by the sun.

Thank you, this kind of data is often timed around federal calendars or deadlines, so it could take a while to register a noticeable $ change
