Jonathan Harvey | Bird Concerto... It's awfully quiet outside now that most of the birds are gone for the winter. And I enjoyed the chirping, whistling, singing and the rest of their noise. I spent at least half of the summer mornings with Harvey and the birds. Now it's just Harvey.

Karlheinz Stockhausen | Mantra #NowListening If my memory serves me right, this one is jazzier, more lyrical and Webernian than the Pestova/Meyer recording. A delight either way.

Sarah Hennies | Motor Tapes #NowListening Over 90 minutes of contemporary classical music, which initially seemed uninteresting to me. Now I find it not only fascinating, but also one of the greatest discoveries/releases of the year.

Marcin Tadeusz Łukaszewski | Piano etudes #NowListening I was looking for some recordings of Paweł Łukaszewski's piano music and found this. The discipline of Bach and the flamboyance of Rachmaninoff sprinkled with Ligeti's intensity. It's quite spectacular, I'd say.

John Luther Adams • Darkness and Scattered Light #NowListening I'm in the mood for some double bass sounds, so it's time for something new. John Luther Adams' works for solo double bass and for five double basses. That looks exciting.

Luciano Berio • Coro #NowListening Perhaps not the best choice on a Saturday morning, or any morning actually, because it requires maximum concentration, but here it is. The choir, by the way, has an incredibly interesting and strong discography. So yeah, thank you BIS Records.

NeoQuartet • String Theory #NowListening This is interesting. NeoQuartet in their own repertoire played on electric instruments. The music is minimalistic, cosmic, rough/lush/soaring ambient with an experimental twist. Tangerine Dream comes to mind here and there. More, please.

Pēteris Vasks • String Quartets 1-3 #NowListening I like the intensity of the First SQ and the warmth and playfulness of the Second. The disc spent nearly fifteen years on the shelf completely ignored and suddenly it turns out that I quite like this music. Hmm...

I think I have never heard this much light, hope, and generally spring in Messiaen's Quartet before. If I had to have a favourite recording of it, this would be the one.

This music is so elegant, lyrical, and calm, even though there's tension. It's rather introverted, but neither shy nor withdrawn, if it makes sense. What strikes me the most, however, is that it sounds as if Bainbridge felt and meant every note that's in the score. Remarkable.

Early morning with Lutosławski's behemoth and Mykietyn's spectrally melodic or melodically spectral adventures. That almost electronically sounding singing/whistling motif at the end of the piece, an earworm, is astonishing.

Daron Hagen • Heike Quinto Heike Quinto, a medieval Japanese chronicle, set to not exactly Japanese music. It is actually koto that creates and completes that illusion. And I don't mind if it's just a stylisation, because I like what I hear. It's an interesting chamber "opera".

Piotr Kurek • Smartwoods I like this mix of acoustic and electric sounds, tiny melodic motifs, summer vibe, and a dream-like atmosphere. It all seems to be written and improvised at the same time. Wonderful music. PS Is ambient jazz a thing?...

Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa turns 75 today. People started singing their praises last week stressing how important and respected figure she has been in the past 50 years. And yet, somehow, this is her first portrait album. How many live recordings of her music are locked and hidden...

Moniuszko through the lens of experimental/avant-pop (cello, computer, voice) with some glitch, improvisation, industrial, folk (obviously), and jazz thrown into the mix. A highly eclectic project of passion, an homage like no other. I'd say: fire (despite some minor flaws).

This is the fifth day since the head injury. I'm finally allowed to use headphones. And it's about time, too, because I've been listening to the most absurd mix of Vivian's SQs and Bára's orchestral music playing in my head since Monday morning. Can I even untangle this now? (Do I want to?...)

Seán Clancy | Four Sections of Music Unequally Divided And here it is. Mesmerising, sparkling, slow, ambient, modern classical piece for gamelan, analogue synthesizers, and piano. Definitely a highlight of today's releases and, I think, one of the best albums of 2024 so far.

Björk | Fossora I'm a little behind with Björk's discography. I still don't know what I think about Utopia and I haven't heard Fossora yet. Let's change that. On an unrelated note: Björk was born in 1965 and is 58. Madonna was born in 1958 and is 65.

Continuum (drone, dark ambient...) I bought the first Continuum release, but ignored the second. Was it because of the guitars?... Anyway, Construct II has some of that Mulholland Drive darkness that slowly consumes everything around. It would work well in that film.

Wolfgang Rihm | Music for violin and orchestra (volume 1) I'm either not fully awake yet or Dritte Musik actually is a deranged, hallucinatory tango. And quite nightmarish, too. Interesting.

Turntables, electronics, organ, choir, orchestra. Two works: Shiva Feshareki's Aetherworld, which reminds me of Jonathan Harvey's The Summer Cloud's Awakening, and a realisation of Daphne Oram's Still Point (1948/49). If I were told the latter was Jesper Nordin's work, I would believe it. Amazing.

Keyboards are my favourite part of the instrumental palette of the album. Here and there they sound like they were sampled from a 1990s trance/house record. I'd love to hear some remixes taking the material into this direction. There's clearly potential.

The karaoke Pierrot, which is basically Pierrot sans Pierrot, is just a curio, but I like it. And the French version? It feels smoother and more elegant than the original, but at the same time it loses some of its teeth. I'd say it's a curio that stands out, if it makes sense.

David Thorn | Only Sky A guitar wizard and his soundscapes. Loops, delays, sound manipulations... Ambient, drone-like layers next to some Americana. Emotionally, the music ranges from introspective and nostalgic to harsh, even aggressive. Was A Cave, There... is particularly tasty.

Now that's a cracker! Violin, double bass, bass clarinet, percussion, and electronics. Cinematic, danceable, dark minimalism with traces of EDM, house, techno, glitch, jazz... Definitely more experimental than mellow. Good stuff through and through.

Want some ambient/soundscapes chill and creepy as hell at the same time? Well, here it is! Bára Gísladóttir's works for flutes (solo or with electronics*) performed by Björg Brjánsdóttir. Primal, futuristic, soothing, frightening... Definitely one of the best releases of 2024 so far. *and voice!

I like Ursula's almost Webernian approach to material (the echo of the Second Viennese School is evident) that she then injects with emotions and in the end creates something rather unique. There are at least six more discs of her music, but this one is a good introduction.

Ewa Fabiańska-Jelińska | Sonata for Viola and Piano It is so elegant and calm, slightly melancholic, always melodic, often soothing. Andante religioso is probably my favourite movement. It's such a beautiful lullaby.

Celesta, vibraphone, crotales, bass flute, electronics... Music that's ghostly, snowy, nocturnal, fairytale-like, mostly calm, but also slightly ominous... It falls somewhere in the ambient category, especially both Vidders. Really, really interesting release.

Early morning with Schnittke. The Sonata for Violin and Chamber Orchestra sounds like a piece by Shostakovich but performed on the other side of the mirror by the Wonderland Orchestra conducted by the Cheshire Cat and broadcast by Alice Classic FM. I like it.
