You should use the artist's original work. It is much better.

My mom collects old readers from across Canada, and has the complete set of every reader in alberta from 1910 on. The pre-primer (1st grade 1 book) of one of the earliest was written with cursive script. They were expected to learn it and they did. Kids are not stupid.
