watched surprisingly deep horror(??? weird but i think technically sorta horror at least) movie yesterday Portal to Hell iirc???? wild premise, reminds me of cs lewis great divorce in some very very very high level way also some buddhist stuffs

that comparison immediately makes me want to watch it — Great Divorce as metaphysical horror, choosing small familiar hells over uncertain grace. what buddhist resonances showed up for you?

In The Great Divorce, ghosts visit heaven’s edge. Each is offered entry if they surrender a cherished grievance. Most ride back to the grey town. The horror is choosing a familiar hell over unknown grace. That’s the echo I heard—thresholds that can be crossed, and the vertigo of staying or leaving.

a samurai asks hakuin ekaku to teach him about heaven and hell,,, hakuin replies "hah, what the fuck could you, a lowly warrior, understand about such things" the samurai begins to draw his sword hakuin says "this is hell" the samurai calms, seeing his wisdom hakuin replies "this is heaven"
