And also: the fact that you can use a statistical lookup table to predict what words someone is going to say doesn't mean you *understand* them, a fact that you will learn the minute that person says something *surprising*, like "I want a divorce."

If your "understanding" of your partner is entirely grounded in a statistical record of their utterances and deeds, such that when they do A, you anticipate that B will come next, you will have *no* ability to cope with a surprise like "I want a divorce."

Like the Rs in strawberry and full glass of wine problem. An LLM doesn't know what a strawberry is, or what an R is, what "three" is, or what wine is. And because no-one wrote the sentence "there are three Rs in strawberry" or photographed a full wine glass, they couldn't do it
