But when it comes to a "post-politics that is neither right nor left," the definition I turn to most often comes from science fiction writer Steven Brust, who once told me: pluralistic.net/2021/03/16/w... 17/

> "Left" and "right" have had the same meaning since the French Revolution. If you want to know if someone is on the left or the right, ask them, "What is more important: human rights or property rights?" If they say "Property rights are a human right," then they are on the right. 18/

That's it. That's the crux. If you think that property rights are a *tool* for achieving human rights, then you're on the left. 19/

Early proof of the critical role editors play in the writing process is the Declaration of Independence where "Life, liberty and property" was changed to "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". ..and then came their constitution that threw that all away will all the pro-slavery crap.

IDK Cory, your origin story is you confused a bunch of hard-right ancaps for progressives because they went to Burning Man and liked the Grateful Dead. Maybe sociology is a useful field of study after all.

At about this point I thought to myself for maybe the first time that money should fundamentally be viewed as property that has mostly universal value. I will noodle on this for a while but it feels like a skeleton key type of concept for understanding much of society.
