For dumb people like me who see such a dredger for the first time ->

AI Overview The "Atlant" refers to a prominent backhoe dredger (BHD) operating primarily in European and Russian waterways.Key Technical SpecificationsVessel Type: Backhoe Dredger (BHD) / Non-self-propelled DredgerFlag: RussiaOperational Status: ActivePrimary Applications: Deepening and maintaining maritime navigation channels, port development, and shore protection. It has recently been deployed for heavy dredging campaigns in critical areas such as the Ust-Luga terminal (Port Favor) in Russia.Understanding Backhoe DredgersUnlike Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHDs) that vacuum up loose sediment while moving, a backhoe dredger like the Atlant is equipped with a massive, heavy-duty hydraulic excavator boom mounted onto a stationary pontoon or barge platform. How it works: It uses high-capacity mechanical buckets to dig into hard, compact seabed layers, clay, or boulder-ridden soils that hydraulic suction pipes cannot easily break apart.Disposal: The excavated material is excavated and directly transferred onto split-hopper barges moored alongside the dredger to be carried away for disposal or land reclamation.
