Was just skimming through the webpages of some of my favorite hard science fiction authors and wow the majority of them hate LLMs: a surprising number of them because they think it is a useless parrot that doesn’t work(!), some because of IP, and a minority because of worries about existential risk.

Maybe some performative shielding against accusations from fans is also at play? An author openly admitting they use these tools would question their "authenticity"/"originality" in the eyes of many, even though there are many legitimate ways to use them.

This gets exponentially more threatening if the author is known for a specific style/world building that could easily repeated/extended with LLMs. "Discworld", "Harry Potter", "Game of Thrones" as prominent examples. Those authors need the fiction of originality, that is what sells. Related ->

Yeah this is my thought too. Professing a more nuanced opinion of AI could make you a target of a witchhunt, which is hard to come back from. e.g. Hank Green
