Right, it seems like two stories are getting conflated here. Apple is reportedly considering charging for some of their AI features due to compute costs, but the hardware price hikes are all about the insane demand for memory. They would feel the need to do this even if they ditched AI altogether.

I mean, yes, but this is splitting hairs. They also partook in a good share of the demand for AI hardware which led to this crisis.

The crisis is because of data centers that aren’t even operating yet. I don’t think Apple would need that much compute for consumer level tasks.

It’s not splitting hairs. Apple has basically sat out the AI investment frenzy so far. The memory crisis is being driven by the likes of OpenAI, Microsoft, Oracle, and Google.
