An immature male rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) on its way south. Earlier this year, it hatched in the northwest part of the continent. Photo taken at Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, Albuquerque on October 2, 2026. #nature #naturephotography #birds

A hummingbird sits on a bare gray branch. The bird is in the shade, making for reduced detail and a more somber mood. It's erect and facing the camera, providing a good view of the undersides. The black bill is short by hummingbird standards, is thin, and comes to a sharp point. The chin is a mix of white streaks and green and orange patches. The visible part of the crown looks dark. The visible eye is dark, with a small white patch immediately behind it. The supercilium is orange. The breast is pale. The flanks and undertail coverts have an orange wash. The visible parts of the wings look dark. The background for the image is a blurry mix of light and dark gray.
