IMO ppl are too tough on Diamond City. It's a very safe place to trade, making it a perfect bazaar for farmers, scavengers and merchants. NPCs constantly reference how they plan to visit DC to buy or sell something. Same goes for the two big cities in Fallout 3, the safety alone is worth it.

"Where do they get their food?" Like any city, most of the produce comes from outside, including distant farms. "How do they make wares?" They don't have to. The wares come into the city and are then exchanged for corn, haircuts, medicine, drinks etc. The city provides a safe space for trade.
