The point of a fight isn't to be the winner, it isn't to kick the shit out of the other guy and walk away laughing. The point of a fight is to hold your own long enough to get away. That's it. Nobody wins a fistfight, there are only losers - especially a fistfight that gets broken up by the cops.

Learn to throw and take a punch, it's important. But never delude yourself into thinking that it's a good idea to start a fight. Every trans person NEEDS to know how to defend themselves, but that's where the buck stops. Know how to block a punch. Know how to throw a punch. And know when to run.

Yeah. This is why I always try and avoid confrontation as much as possible because I know I wouldn't be able to outrun, nor am I much of a fighter anyway... So the best option is to not be in or see oneself out of a situation as much as possible.

As for how to learn this. Striking: Muay Thai. Most gyms are solid and don't really focus on nonsense. Grappling and ground: BJJ (Brazilian jiu-jitsu). Same sort of a deal. Main important thing is that they do live contact exercises, so you really get to learn it, and they're practical.

When i was a kid my dad taught me how to fight and the first thing he said was "if you're in a situation and some guy is talking loudly that he can kick ass and is so good at fights, ignore that guy; watch out for the quiet guy watching it all cause if you know how to fight, you don't brag about it"
