Now, onto the meat of things. You've probably all heard the saying "you can't be hypnotized against your will" as one of the reassuring things we're told about hypnosis. I've used it myself, it's a good line to summarize and simplify a really really complex topic. But it's a simplification.

The truth is more nuanced than that. When you're a knowledgeable, participating party and you're aware of what's happening, it's 100% true. If you don't want to be hypnotized and you know someone is trying to hypnotize you, then it won't work. Simple as that. You just wish it away and it's gone.
