Chris Mihos @chrismihos.bsky.social · 15/08/2026OK, an important point as we forge through the new era of large astronomical surveys and archival datasets. So much data is online that its easy to grab it and use it for new research. That's good! But there is a difference between how we cite large all sky surveys vs targeted observations. 1/n 🔭 1288
Chris Mihos @chrismihos.bsky.social · 15/08/2026When we use, say, SDSS data or Gaia data or Euclid data (etc) it's fine -- (I think! tell me if I'm wrong) -- to cite the survey release papers and then use the data. If there is a special reduction process/catalog, cite that too, of course. 2/n 1100
Chris Mihos @chrismihos.bsky.social · 15/08/2026But targeted observatories are different. If you found online data from HST, Chandra, JWST, KPNO, CFHT, etc, you shouldnt just grab it and say "archival data from X observatory." 3/n 1110
