Kirk disobeys orders or bends the rules something like twice in TOS. (Diverting the Enterprise to save Spock's life in "Amok Time" and not telling Starfleet about finding Zephram Cochrane alive in "Metamorphosis.") AFAIK, I don't think there are any other examples.

I think it’s also tied to the Prime directive being so loosely interpreted by Kirk (even when the show just decides to ignore it with no character calling it out) The Prime Directive is something of a narrative albatross for a show that has to have the crew make a difference

Yeah, but that's also the product of TNG era ST reinterpreting the Prime Directive WAY more strictly than TOS ever did. So people are judging Kirk by TNG era standards.

Oh it was absolutely reflecting the cultural norms of the 60s vs late 80s But Kirk loosely interpreting the Prime Directive is still a thing within the series Heck even before STNG it was a point of discussion among fans

The Parker Legacy (Thanks for the memories, Pete!) @benreilly149.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

It's been pointed out that in TOS, Kirk has more leeway because communications with Starfleet are slower, which means they expect him to make on the spot calls.
