Mar Hicks @histoftech.bsky.social · 26/07/2026For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town. 423403912
Mar Hicks @histoftech.bsky.social · 26/07/2026AI has really paved the way for the erosion of consent and the use of other people’s images that these panopticon glasses require as a cultural base line. I do think there’s a powerful connection between people becoming acculturated to AI products || accepting that spy glasses are the new normal. 542479
Mar Hicks @histoftech.bsky.social · 26/07/2026Also, this is from 2014 and it’s still relevant theory/background: it matters who is irresistibly positioned as the object and who is the subject of these technologies. That has a huge effect on failure or adoption, & is a historical process as much as anything else: bsky.app/profile/hist...Mar Hicks@histoftech.bsky.socialYes. Neil Turkewitz @neilturkewitz.bsky.social · 26/07/2026Alas, the privacy concerns expressed by most “internet freedom” activists & orgs also set the stage for these kinds of privacy invasions. They were uniquely focused on freedom from government surveillance & almost entirely overlooked the risk presented by tech companies. @hypervisible.blacksky.app 264
Meredith Farkas @librarianmer.bsky.social · 26/07/2026A friend of mine posted a video of an older woman dancing at a concert and while he meant it to be complementary ("I hope I'm like that at her age!") I was shocked that he felt it was ok to film her and then share it. And he's a librarian!!! It's become so normalized and that's really disturbing. 2240
