Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

The result of this marketing push to call everything "AI" has been an increase in distrust of ML by non-technical people, at least in my experience. I've heard a few different people say "AI is just the latest fad. Remember Machine Learning? No one talks about that anymore bc it was useless too"

Tbh I'm not even keen on machine learning. I'd love to see more use of "predictive model" which imo leads naturally to "what does it predict / model"

I asked my wife (someone lay but well informed) the difference between Machine Learning and an LLM. She defined Machine Learning as the learning process, and an LLM is an example of the outcome of the learning process. This is both accurate and not at all the distinction proposed here!
