Yep. This is the Japanese way. I heard it countless times visiting aquariums.
The only way most Japanese people seem to be able to approach animals is:
1. Is it cute?
If yes: "it's so cute!"
If no: 2. Does it look delicious?
If yes: I want to eat it.
If no: It's scary/horrible/disgusting/etc.
