I'm white and cis, and every day I am offered ways to buy into mechanisms that claim to - and might! - benefit me and the family they recognize, for the trivial cost of turning on & discarding the family they find distasteful, or that I fail to recognize as family in my own bias.

I am given the same bargain in Queer communities, and others as my identity becomes more granular. It is never a good deal; the stated cost is already too high, the security promised is an illusion, and the tax is always my dignity. Division is among the worst of human impulses & looms everywhere.

There are many people with whom I share no fellowship, and *who* they are is hard to define. I value sharpness, viciousness, rigidity — in defense of the vulnerable. The thing you want, the thing you stand for, matters far more than your poise or countenance. That I how I come to know my enemies.
