Some years ago, a woman in Exeter was driving her son to school on a rainy morning. Stopped at a red light, she glanced idly at the car in the next lane. The man driving was her son, she knew as truly as she knew her own name, only as he would be when he reached his twenties, in a car she did not recognise, wearing a coat she had not bought.⁣
⁣
The lights changed, and she lost pace with the car in traffic. Her son fidgeted in the passenger seat, talking about how he was going to be an astronomer one day. Reflexively, she used it as an opportunity to remind him that he would need to be very good at maths, so had to do his homework.⁣
⁣
She never told her son about what she had thought she had seen that day, and although he has now passed his driving test he has not yet bought a car. She has seen that coat in the shops, and knew that he would like it and it would suit him, but she has not, so far, bought it.
