I call upon big follower accounts, small follower accounts, all accounts to use #alttext so that Bluesky users like me, people with visual impairments, can see all posts and understand what your pictures and images mean. I’m persistent. Ask @mayor.nyc.gov. 😊 #accessibility #SheShed

FIRST: WHAT ALT TEXT IS ACTUALLY FOR

Alt text exist first and foremost for access accessibility. You have always been able to add it to your post, it’s not a new feature.

it allows screen readers to describe images to people who are visually impaired

That is its primary and most important purpose.

IF YOU’RE WONDERING ”WHAT IS ALT TEXT ANYWAY?”

In the simplest terms:

Alt text = a short, literal description of what’s in an image, written so someone who can’t see it still understands it

That’s it.

Here on Bluesky there's a simple setting that you can select so that you can't post an image without Alt Text. You don't even have to remember to do it yourself. It's not difficult and it helps those who need it. 💙
