Genuine question: Would it be better if this ghastly practice shovels the unwanted marine life back into the sea or would it be better environmentally if it was used for something such as fertiliser on land?

Fishing methods decades ago were not as invasive in scale or scope, which might explain the minimal recovery mentioned in the article. On the other hand, industrial trawlers have replaced those smaller boats, drastically increasing the scale and impact of seabed destruction. A major difference.

This would probably be illegal on land. One km wide cutting zones. Unless it was trees cut down in a rainforest to facilitate meat production Or a drained marshland for agriculture. Or a drained lake for irrigation. Or a flooded river valley for a dam. Or a wild-fired forest for big oil CO2.
