Hey, are we violin posting over here? How about a little fiddle? Ashley MacIsaac, the enfant terrible of Inverness County. There’s something so of its time in this whole album, the melding of traditional Scottish fiddle music and mid 90s EDM. Plus, it’s got my last name. youtu.be/pfAgb_J1yOI

Keeping to west Cape Breton, with the Rankin Family. “Did you know Jimmy worked throwing hay bales for your uncle Francis?” Yeah, you tell that story every time you’re “all fired up.” True Mabou legends. Nostalgia and homesickness all tied in a messy knot. youtu.be/uzqDpmpAIhI

Another extra bit of lore. The amount of Rankin Family that was played in my house as a kid was truly inconceivable. And every time we’d go to Mabou to visit the family, it’d be “did you see Heather/Cookie/whoever down at the Red Shoe? Oh, she sure can sing.”
