The #Anthropocene is real‼️ We have to deal with the consequences‼️ This is the message of two new major papers in @natrevearthenviron.nature.com under the lead of @uniofleicester.bsky.social and with @ostseeforschung.bsky.social participation. 1) tinyurl.com/4ax54tbj 2) tinyurl.com/5cf4syss

These two milestone papers are the work of in total 46 researchers from 43 different scientific institutions located in 16 different countries representing 5 continents. Amongst them (shown on this photo): Juliana Assunção Ivar do Sul, who is a member of the Anthropocene Working Group AWG, and Jerome Kaiser – both from the Leibniz-Institut für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde (IOW). They contributed their expertise in Baltic Sea sediment stratigraphy & anthropogenic markers such as microplastics to these groundbreaking papers.

The Baltic Sea, by the way, played a significant role in the search for the key marker or gloden spike defining the Anthropocene. Specifically, the focus was on a sediment core from the East Gotland Basin in the central Baltic Sea. It was one of twelve candidates worldwide under consideration for a potential GSSP (“Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point”) – that is the formal stratigraphic reference point intended to mark the beginning of the Anthropocene.
