IMO Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the greatest film ever made. It's perfect on every level as a movie, but also as an innovative work of toon/live crossover art.
Coyote vs Acme is the closest anything has come to that level of success. It lacks the lush period style, but it nails the characters.
