CDT joined AI Now Institute, American Civil Liberties Union, and several organizations dedicated to tech policy, consumer protection, and civil rights in a letter to Senate leadership and the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee opposing the “AI Innovation Labs” language in Sec. 10509 of the CLARITY Act.

The letter urges Senate not to move this language forward in procedural vote today. The proposed AI Innovation Labs would allow companies exemptions from consumer protection laws for AI within financial services, increasing risks to consumers’ privacy, financial security + access to opportunities.

It is surprising that Chuck Schumer would not approach Majority Leader, John Tune, and persuade him to jointly schedule a special address to the nation on the cloud overhanging AI developments and that Congress will be aggressively scheduling emergency hearings for policy development purposes.
