What's your take on linkedin dm's of the type: - "Hey, I notice you work at ... would you refer me and tell me about the interview process"? - don't know or remeber the person but we are 1st contact according to lunkedin - they have never contacted me until now. Do you reply? If so what?

Probably ignore. Although you’re connected, if you don’t remember who they are it seems like a cold call

I’m usually quite open that referrals require me to write an in depth essay on why someone is a good fit for a specific role, so I’d only be comfortable doing that for someone I’d worked with previously and knew really well. But I’m generally happy to share some interview process tips.

A lot of people tell candidates that the main way to get interviews is through networking and through referrals. With the job market the way it is, lots of people are looking for work. If you'd like to refer them, you can. Maybe tell them about the interview process or just ignore the dm.
