The Third Way people can't: 1) explain what "extremism" is; 2) explain their position on NSPM-7, which similarly targets "extremism" that's poorly and broadly defined.

There are 100 people at Third Way doing things like prepping amendments for votearama to highlight Rs jeopardizing public safety, doing polling on Trump actions that are and aren’t breaking through with voters we must win, building out new policy ideas like ending medical debt, and prepping Dems to grill Trump Admin officials. So forgive my eye roll about one new position.

I personally think that $140-$150K could be better spent on a “Director of Defeating Republicans” — especially since we’re 83 days out from existentially important midterm elections — but you do you I guess. x.com/petersterne/st…

NYT just published a long report on the governments efforts to investigate left-leaning groups engaged in First Amendment protected activity, and you don’t see how a position investigating supposed left-wing extremism isn’t received well?

If you care about defeating the authoritarian right, you should support efforts to ensure the viability of candidates running against authoritarian lawmakers. That means early and robust opposition research!

That doesn’t answer my question. So the goal of this position is just opposition research? Then why use the term “extremism”? There’s some quite robust literature on it, and Third Way’s usage here is certainly, uh, interesting.

You don’t think abolishing police and prisons, defunding the DOD, eliminating the Senate and letting Congress (not voters!) pick the president and Supreme Court, and government control of companies and industries is extreme? That’s what they say they are for in their new platform.

There’s a giant different between “extreme” (subjective, etc.) and “extremism” (has actual academic definitions). No, I don’t think it’s “extremism.” Who’s the out-group?

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.

I don't agree with DSA on everything, nor have I ever been a member. But the idea that this organization is "extremist" is nonsensical and dangerous at a time when the federal government is openly targeting anyone it deems "far left."

Sadly, this disease infects most of the Democratic Party. You’ll notice, when they talk about Republicans, they never note that they’re fascistic, reactionary, repressive, oppressive…they just say they’re “extreme.” It’s so that they can use it on the left, too.
