European Citizen @jerry78.bsky.social · 31/08/2026It’s a pity Iceland chose not to resume EU accession talks. Europe is stronger when more Europeans stand together. But why should a prosperous country give up autonomy to a Union that often looks divided? Would Iceland have voted differently if Europe were stronger, more united and clearly led? 100
ssgp.bsky.social @ssgp.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Maybe not. I think it has more to do with Iceland's unique position rather than European leadership. It makes sense for France, Germany, and hopefully Ukraine to be part of EU but that is not true for every country. albertoalemanno.substack.com/p/a-lesson-f...albertoalemanno.substack.comA Lesson from IcelandThe negative vote is not a rejection of Europe, but it shows that EU membership is not the only path to European integration. 110
European Citizen @jerry78.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I agree, it doesn’t make sense for every country. Still, given how close the vote was, I wonder if a stronger, more cohesive Europe might have convinced more Icelanders to vote yes. Iceland is unique, but unless you’re a specialised economy like Switzerland, going it alone is very risky today. 110
