I've certainly internalized and agree with the moral. It's just the specific phrasing in terms of cubes that I'm nitpicking. I don't think most people will agree off the bat that a cube of any volume can paint a square of any area. They will say a cube of volume X^3 paints an area of 6X^2.

Of course, we can re-shape that cube of paint and then paint a larger area. I just thought the point might be made more effectively by noting this directly. It's clear a non-cubical box can achieve any surface area using arbitrarily small volume.

Put another way, yes, the bucket phrasing is what I would prefer to the cube phrasing. Or such things. "Is it strange that a gallon of paint can cover any area?". Then we don't introduce this red herring of thinking about the cube shape to start with.
