Local fire season ends and burn ban lifts Thursday
Fire season ends at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, on forestland protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry in northwest Oregon, and Washington County's fire agencies lift their summer burn ban at the same minute.
The change covers all five districts in ODF's Northwest Oregon Area, the department said Wednesday: Astoria, Forest Grove, Tillamook, North Cascade and West Oregon. In the Astoria, Forest Grove and Tillamook districts, all restrictions tied to regulated use and industrial fire precaution levels have been lifted, ODF's Forest Grove District said in an update Wednesday afternoon.
Washington County's high-fire danger burn ban has been in effect since June 15, the same day fire season began in ODF's Astoria, Forest Grove and Tillamook districts. Every fire agency in the county, including Banks Fire District 13 and Forest Grove Fire & Rescue, is lifting it on the recommendation of the Washington County Fire Defense Board, which consulted with ODF, the agencies said in a joint release.
"While fire danger has eased, it hasn't disappeared, and an outdoor fire can still get out of control," the release said.
There is no slash burning yet, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue spokesperson Matt Johnston said. Burning slash, the debris left from forest harvesting, requires a permit year-round, the department said. Its Forest Grove District takes questions and permit requests at 503-359-7499 or fgburninfo@oregon.gov.
Backyard burning is allowed in the Banks Fire District starting Thursday, Scott Adams, the district's public information officer, said in a Facebook post. Residents should check the district's burn message at 503-324-6262, ext. 2, before burning, he said. Burn piles must be attended at all times, he said, and residents should have a safe fire line around each one and water and a shovel on hand.
"If you even think your burn pile may be getting out of control, please call 911 and let us help you," Adams said. He said larger burn piles should be started early in the morning so they will be out, or nearly out, by night.
Outside Forest Grove city limits, residents and farmers can start burning debris Thursday, Forest Grove Fire & Rescue said in a Facebook post. Residents may burn only yard debris, under Oregon Department of Environmental Quality rules.
Inside the city, yard debris burning is allowed only in the spring season, March 1 through May 15. Burn-day information for Forest Grove is at burndaymessage.com.
On land ODF protects, property owners can burn residential yard debris and use burn barrels without a permit once fire season ends, the department said. It asked people to skip burning on dry, windy days, keep water and a shovel at the pile, and never leave a burn unattended.
Rules vary by jurisdiction. Washington County's burn ban boundary map shows whether burning is allowed at a given address.
