I Used to Believe in Monsters
There, in the pines, you can see The arching contorted antlers dripping of moss and inky black mud shimmering like a curse-
Ancient and steadfast,
A mark of history,
A clear reminder of the past and the future that will not be.
It's eyes are voids to stare into.
It's hoofed and on haunches like a wounded tree that grew creaking and crooked branches.
Or like a hurt man folded into a scream, Ready to die or claw through whatever severed him from the dream-Powerful, violent, and true.
And it speaks like us, or at least tries to rob us from our voice and wear Our skin like tear-soaked eyes try to blink and bare all the awful surprises that others shouldn't know.
It wants to be like us when it rises
And to make us pay when the stitches show.

I used to believe in monsters.
Then I grew. Now I wish to believe they were the only being that wanders with debts it can't reprieve.
