Procedural animations do feel smoother. I’m no game dev but I like the look, reminds me of older DS games.

I actually like both. The original sprites feel like they have a more readable and defined shape. The proc animated ones are a lot more dynamic, but lose that sense of identity. It's a trade off, but it just depends on what your priorities are with the aesthetic.
