As an ex-Chair of a planning committee I hugely welcome the Gov's plans to speed up the planning system. Let me explain why... www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Planning reforms will end development chaos, says Angela Rayner

Officials will be able to rubberstamp development plans without local authority permission under the changes.

Speeding up planning, but how? If it means by not treading wisely, then no. If it means cutting the pointless bits, then yes The how is what really matters. Never save time at all costs

Councillors on planning committees are there to fulfil a statutory responsibility. As one ex-colleague put it 'the role is to determine the lawfulness of the application, not how well liked it is'. But all too-often, councillors either choose to ignore this or sadly simply don't understand it.

Such a good thread. Our local councillor’s are unsurprisingly playing blatant politics with all of this. Hopefully our new MP can educate them @joshdeanmp.bsky.social

Great summary Kevin. Having engaged in the process on the other side of the table, all the points you raise are relevant to nearly all committees.

Good thread. I chaired Greenwich's planning board back in 2006-10, when social media was in its infancy. Can imagine how tough it is now with social media pile-ons. Another advantage of reform wd be taking power away from party whips (anyone who tells you whips don't influence planning is lying).

councillors on planning committees are there to fulfill a role to determine if the application is lawful. Given the problems you outline, this seems inappropriate in the first place? Surely lawyers and council planning officers should fulfill this kind of role? People free from political pressure.
