Go further. They should be required to live with the conditions they provide as an economic floor. If they want better then they need to do better.

Allegedly Allegedly Crooked

Alt: Snip of a scene from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). A reporter is on the phone calling in a story to his paper, he says: "allegedly crooked inside and out". The person on the other end of the call says: "yeah". Then the reporter says: "and for my money you can cut out the 'allegedly'".

I would also like for members of Congress to be treated like average Americans who get FIRED whenever they decide not to report to work for weeks at a time.

010

Cigar smoking heathen @doc2marines.bsky.social · 7h

The federal minimum wage is good for them just like it for everyone else. If they dont work 40 hrs a week they get no benefits, oh your going overseas for "work"..we need to see a time sheet. We need a whole wrecking ball

Include no Federal retirement for elected & appointed officials. They have Social Security like the rest of us. No raises for electeds unless minimum wage is increased at same time & same %.

lol they make about $180,000 per year and leave government as millionaires!!!! They ain’t there for the salary or health care

010

Mike A @bazinga987.bsky.social · 5h

Congressional salaries shouldn't be the same for all. Each Rep should be limited to the average salary of the people in their district. See how fast minimum wage goes up then.

000

Satan's Cupcake @satanscupcake.bsky.social · 6h

The part I would change is the salary. I'd suggest that they are paid the average salary their district or state earns. If they want a raise, they get their constituents a raise.

bovineballista.bsky.social @bovineballista.bsky.social · 4h

I broadly support the concept, I don't think the salary thing as stated would work, but directly tying their pay to median income is a good idea. And there is absolutely no reason at all for us to be paying for their health care, if social health care isn't extended to everyone. -1.

Thede @tedcross.bsky.social · 3h

I would go one further: while in office, any previous wealth accumulated before being elected must be placed in a blind trust and as long as you are in office, you cannot touch a dime. Watch how fast they improve wages and healthcare.

This would most likely lift the quality of candidates as those who genuinely want to serve the people will run. Same as CEO salaries, pay less to find those who actually want to do the job well, rather than be there for the ridiculously large pay check.
