If the reaction to your output is "neat, but check this out" then you FAILED. The job is not just to produce outputs! The job is to enable the right action to happen downstream. A change in real world decisions and behaviors. This workslop is overwhelming real work. Flooding the zone with shit.

No tool is frictionless. You can prove that easily enough by slicing vegetables with a hammer. Tools create a river of frictionlessness, buttressed with steep banks of friction. The specific ways in which LLMs are frictionless encourage slop. The frictions of LLMs discourage editing & fact checks.

It's interesting to contrast with the original vision for the computer. The LLM doesn't aim to be a "bicycle for the mind" (Jobs) nor extend senses and reach (MCLuhan) but displace cognition. Instead of a machine that does what you tell it, it's a machine that tells.

Instead of reducing friction across the system, LLMs encourage you to offload your own friction onto other people. It's the wet dream of "idea guys" who were already doing this, but now have the tools to bamboozle workers. Their documents are still just "the idea" — plus 1000 words of padding.

I find image generation tools to be ALL friction. They don’t produce what is asked for. When making a slight change to settings, they produce WILDLY different output. No “tool” should ever be non-determinant. I’ve been entertained by them making stupid shit-post stuff, but that’s it.
