A document or visual used to have value because there was a sense of intent behind it. Someone read through the sources and thought through the angles and has invested the product with their credibility. AI generated documents and visuals claim the same credibility: they resemble polished outputs.

But inside, the document is just mush. It is not fit for purpose because it is just pretending to have done the work. So it's a great opportunity for people to *signal* that they have done the work without actually needing to do it. The amount of documents has exploded, but no new insights emerge.

For years I’ve been talking about the idea that content (“documents,” articles, posts, messages, whatev) is defined by the intentional message present in the artifact; it is a way of transmitting something that embodies a perspective to an audience. LLMs do not have perspective, only context

Wow this one goes so hard cause it’s so True. This is exactly what is so infuriating about the so called productivity gains of workplace AI. Maybe if it was actually better at thinking through information and synthesizing coherence from it the way they claimed it would be & not a fancy autocomplete

As a result, the impact of creating and sharing an AI generated document, just like creating and sharing an AI cool video, is zero. That's fine for memes but it's not fine for the workplace, where the document is not just your output but also an input into a downstream process.
