Despite my best efforts I'm writing about AI again. Tomorrow's issue of Product Picnic is channeling Ed Zitron. AI is no longer optional: it's forced into every product you use and scraping every word you write. If the past decades were the age of user centered design, now is the age of no consent.

One of the things I’ve been fighting for in our company is an “if we provide a prompt or LLM based feature, we should also support a simple rule-based version of the feature” policy. It’s often a good test for “this actually benefits from AI / this is just an excuse to impress analysts”

I wonder if we need a more nuanced way of describing consent in this context? Rather than “passive” consent models like terms of service or “active” consent models like informed consent, what if we approached consent as a continuous process (similar to “social license to operate”)?
