The text generating machine is no closer to being AI (that is, intelligent) than it was in 2022. It's certainly no closer to being AGI. And by the time we move on from Super Intelligence (Cosmic Consciousness?) to something else next year, it won't have made any progress towards any of those goals.

It's not enough for Altman to just be building a text generating machine. It has to Change Everything. That's what he's actually selling - not a chatbot to people paying twenty bucks a month, but a utopian vision to billionaires. So the story has to keep getting bigger and bigger.

What we never realized, but Altman has, is that generating seo-optimized drivel at scale is really hard and takes a superintelligence the rest of us don't have. Same with seeing beyond the laws of biology to give ai-generated capybaras five legs. Only the real genius sees the possibilities.

Kind of like Dragon Ball Z where they start by fighting the weakest goon on the squad and finish by blowing up the universe, Sam Altman has to constantly up the power level of his story's protagonist (GPT). Of course just like DBZ it's all fictional. GPT can't even reach Super Saiyan (GPT5).
