Ackoff's quote is equally relevant here: "Managers who don't know how to measure what they want settle for wanting what they can measure." Managers who only know how to measure NPS ask for NPS increases. Managers who only know click maximizing ask for more clicks. Neither is actually valuable.

One addendum to this is the confused notion of "ship to learn." As you can see, there *are* certain things you can only know after you build and ship something. You won't know the real impact on your trailing indicators until you do. But teams take that as "you can ONLY learn anything by shipping"

"Ship to learn" turns every leading indicator into a trailing indicator, at the very end of a long and laborious process that could have been short-circuited by drawing a doodle and talking to a couple of people. When you're after value instead of clicks, that's enough to get a directional signal.
